Wood Letter Sculpture

The aim of this Sculpture I project was to create a relief wood sculpture of a letter that when paired with the other sculptures would spell out “Go Cats”. The letterform was required to fit within the 20” x 24” piece of plywood handed out for the project, but additional materials were allowed as long as plywood acted as the base for the letterform. The letter chosen for this project was the letter ‘A’ and the inspiration for this sculpture was an arching cat. The cat’s form is broken down into basic geometric shapes to create not just an abstract style, but to make the cat appear more like the letter in form.

To achieve the counter of a capital ‘A’, the stomach of the cat is cut out and exposed, adding to the abstract nature of the design. Unnatural, highly saturated colors are utilized as well to further enhance this abstracted look further. A narrative is created through not only the defensive position of the cat, but with the fish in the cat’s mouth and belly. While it works as a strong stand alone piece, the sculpture is best viewed hung up with the rest of the letterform sculptures and placed within the context of its creation.
